Having released his album 'Shotta Culture' in 2010, dancehall
artiste Spragga Benz is now getting ready to release a video album with
all the songs on the CD, as well as a documentary.
On the album that was produced by American producer Salaam
Remi, ZJ Bambino and PJ Butta, there are collaborations with other acts
like Stephen Marley, Marcia Griffiths, Swizz Beats, Jazmine Sullivan,
Nas, Wayne Wonder, Sizzla Kalonji and Queen Ifrica.
Showing what he describes as "the roots of the music", Spragga Benz says the video album will complete the package.
With 17 tracks on the album and several collaborations, he admitted that it was difficult to schedule video shoots
with all the artistes. So to ensure that everyone is seen, he said
excerpts from performances that he did with some of these acts have been
included on the video compilation.
"The album was a total of 17 songs, so we did 17 videos," he
said, noting that his son Carlton Grant also died when he was 17 years
old.
"When mi did just a do the album, I wanted to do something that
represents the genre on the level that it should be represented. I want
it to be a full package. I just have to make the documentary to seal the
whole package," he said.
Spragga Benz also added that the video album is near completion and the documentary, Shotta Culture HD, will follow shortly after.
"The documentary is basically done already. Sandy (hurricane)
slow up a lot of the editing, but by the end of this year we should be
finished and ready for release by the first quarter of next year," he
told THE STAR.
A deeper insight
"It's about my life, upbringing, the struggles, things
that we do as ghetto youths to make a difference. People will get a
deeper insight into who I am," Spragga added.
Although he is optimistic, Spragga Benz says he does not know how
the video album and the documentary will be received by the general
public.
"That is up to the people after it is done. The greatest thing is
that I do my work and I am satisfied with the outcome. It is not the
hype-up hype-up thing, so dem ago slow to it, but at the end of the day
they are going to respect the quality," he said.
Meanwhile, Spragga Benz is in the process of making the music video for his song Sleep With Angels that should be released by the end of the year. He is also promoting newer songs like Name Brand, She Love Me, Prettiness Activate and Tell Me Who.
