The Guild of Students at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, is gearing up to host Fresher's Fête 2013. According to the guild's Culture, Arts and Entertainment Chairperson (CAEC) Miguel 'Gramma Zone' Reid, Fresher's Fête is the ultimate welcome party for the new crop of university students. Reid and his team are working to make the experience special.
"At Fresher's Fête, it's always about Caribbean unity as well as welcoming our new students, and this year we will be doing so in fine style. UWI has a reputation for its emphasis on culture and, for this Fresher's Fête, various aspects of our entertainment culture will be visited in order to give students that dynamic entertainment package," Reid said.
The party will be staged next Friday, August 30, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Students' Union on the campus. The theme is 'Black Out' and Reid says the venue's decor will depict all that the tag line implies.
"I don't want to give away too much information about the theme, but what I would encourage is for all potential patrons to turn out expecting to be surprised and wowed. The music will also be Caribbean in every sense of the word," he said.
DJs booked to play include ZJ Chrome of Zip FM, Arif Cooper of FAME FM, DJ Spinn, and Mona campus-based sound system Hypnosis, with DJ Moonshine and DJ Jinxx.
The fête will also feature performances by Masicka and one of Reggae Sumfest's top performers.
Officers from the UWI Mona Police Station, as well as hired security personnel, will be on hand. The Students' Union has a designated parking area. Admission to UWI Fresher's Fête 2013 is $400 presold and $600 at the gate.
"This year, Fresher's Fête will be great and memorable. They say first impressions last and we are pulling out all the stops to ensure that this staging will never be forgotten," Reid said.
The day before Fresher's Fête, Reid will host a culturally rich Fresher's Concert on Thursday August 29, also at the Students' Union. Fresher's Concert will feature performances from the various halls of residence as well as a guest performer.
