Eton Gordon (born August 11, 1984) better known by his stage name Kalado, is a Jamaican recording artist. Kalado resided in Maxfield Park, Kingston, until he moved to Clarendon at the age of four. After graduating from Edwin Allen High School at age 16, with a CXC Distinction Honour for Art & Craft, he moved back to Kingston with the intention to pursue a visual arts career. But as fate would have it, he was destined to become a performing artist. Instead of drawing, he has become a musician - one of the most prominent newcomers to the Dancehall Reggae scene to date.
Kalado developed his love for music after an impromptu performance for several of his friends. Startled by his raw talent, his friends encouraged him to hone his art; and this he did! Building on the influences of his musical mentor Bounty Killer and others such as Junior Gong, Assassin, Busy Signal, Kalado soon configured his own unique style which has its own distinction in the genre. After an exhilarating performance at a local stage show, Kalado received a further nod from fate when his performance was so well received that he was invited as a ''Wild Card'' contestant by International producer, Scatta, to compete in the prestigious Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall.
His journey has been a long one and full of life lessons. He has had to endure social and economic struggles, compounded by absentee parents- a painful struggle that he uses as motivation and inspiration for his music. He has had the opportunity to work with some of the most talented producers in Jamaica such as J Cannon, Dre Dey of Star Status Music and Icon of I.M.G (Icon Music Group). In 2009, he released his first hit single ''Badmind a kill dem'' under his own label, G Law Records. This success brought him much notoriety and pushed his career to new heights. His most recent project is his sophomore "Sad Streets" mixtape. Singles such as ''Carry on'', ''Sad streets'' and ''Provide mi own'' has captured the attention of some of the most influential local disc jocks and has lead to him receiving heavy airplay on almost every station on the island. He has 2 videos "Badmind a kill dem" and "Sad streets", which are from the "Sad Streets" mixtape.
His musical journey elevated to another level when he was officially inducted by Bounty Killer in the Alliance Next Generation (ANG) Camp on his birthday in August 2011. Since then Kalado has gotten the opportunity to both record and perform with his musical icon. Notably, Kalado has performed with Bounty Killer and the ANG at Ocho Rios Jerk Fest, Negril Spring Break, Macka Diamond Birthday Bash and at many more events. He has also recorded a track with Bounty Killer titled “When She Wine” which is currently doing well locally and in the USA.
With his growth now evident in the industry, Kalado was the Jamaica Star nominee for “Best New Artist” for 2011. Since being in the ANG Camp Kalado has embarked on 2 Official Promo tours, the first of which was in April of 2012 where he visited the UK for a 1 month promo tour, performing alongside the Bigship Camp, his fellow ANG stable mates, Erup and other UK acts. After returning to Jamaica in May, Kalado continued to do more recordings and promotional work across the island.
In June 2012 Kalado was also featured by Winford Williams on CVM Onstage entertainment program, right after which he embarked on his second promo tour, this time visiting Canada for another 1 month tour performing in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and other places. His performance in Ottawa earned him 2 things notably. He was featured in the Jamaica Star while in Canada due to his overwhelming performance and gravitation that the females had for him and also the alias “Black Jesus” due to the fact that he had the females’ attention influencing their every movement. His solo effort on Dre Day’s “Ground Zero Riddim” titled “Tear Mi” and his collab with Bounty Killer titled “When She Wine” continues to get a heavy rotation islandwide and worldwide which is clearly evident, due to the fact that the riddim is a juggling with a series of artistes, but juggling everywhere only play these 2 songs.
Since returning to the island in August 2012, Kalado has done an official music video for the collab with himself and Bounty Killer, titled “When She Wine/Tear Mi”, which is now on Hype TV’s Top Ten Music Video Charts and is getting heavy rotation in both the dancehall/party scene and also the radio airwaves, the song is also a major feature on nearly every local and international radio/television charts. He has also recently changed the spelling of his monikor to “Kalado”, after being influenced by Bounty Killer to make the change, a change that Bounty Killer himself had prior made to his former protégé, ‘Vybz Kartel’, who spelt Kartel with a ‘C’ previously.
Kalado has steadily increased his catalogue of songs along with his reputation of being one of Jamaica’s best vocalists, this is significantly evident in his delivery of what some now class as his “breakthrough” song, titled “Make Me Feel”. The song is a class song and has the females going wild in parties, clubs etc. He has also recorded and video a recent release called “Whole Night” which is also getting heavy rotation.
Kalado is expected to create a massive impact in the very near future as his popularity steadily increases. The ANG artist made his first appearance at GT Extravaganza Dec 25, 2012 and did very well, performing in his own slot along with the entire ANG Camp and also appeared at the annually held Stone Love Anniversary on Dec 29th at the Red Stripe Grounds, Kingston. He will also be appearing on Galiday Bounce on Dec 30th, where he is expected to make a statement and leave and indelible mark at his final show for 2012.
There is absolutely NO doubt that Kalado is definitely on his way, armed with a unique perspective, hard hitting lyrics and an energetic act. No one can say it better than Kalado himself: “Look out for me. I’m coming to stand on the world, and if I get tired, I sit in the throne!''.
