Jamaica's beauty inspires melodies

FOR Canadian songwriter Rob 'Tron' Wells, who is in Negril for the Songwriters Camp, Jamaica is the perfect place to release his creativity.

"Jamaica is such a beautiful place. The natural beauty is unbelievable," he gushed during an interview with the Jamaica Observer.

The camp - staged by C2W Music Limited and operated by St Kitts-born Ivan Berry - started last Saturday and scheduled to close tomorrow.

Wells says he last visited Jamaica 19 years ago on vacation. This time, however, it is all about writing songs.

He hopes to pen at least 10 songs during the week-long camp.

Wells has written for pop stars such as Justin Bieber (My World), Selena Gomez (Kiss and Tell), Adam Lambert (For Your Entertainment), Nick Lachey (What's Left of Me) and Backstreet Boys (Unbreakable).

For Wells, the secret to being a good songwriter is "keeping it simple".

"Make your melodies memorable and your lyrics universal," he said, adding that one clue a songwriter is on the right path is "if you can sing your chorus over a 1,000 times and not get bored doing it!"

Wells says his inspiration for songs comes from watching movies or just coming up with a melody. After all his years as a writer and producer, he believes he has been consistent in one area.

"Keep your music truthful. Don't chase fads. As long as you do that success will follow."
