Barkey remembered

NEW YORK, USA - Captain Barkey - the veteran dancehall deejay, who along with his female companion Tracy Bennett was murdered here last Saturday - was remembered as "a jovial and fun-loving person who loved life".

The life and legacy of the reggae artiste was honoured at a special New York City tribute, organised by the popular Irie Jam Radio and Images Media. The tribute attracted a large turnout of Barkey's peers, well-wishers and members of the media fraternity, and drew raw emotions from those who knew and worked with the entertainer.

Chief Executive Officer of Irie Jam Bobby Clarke described Barkey's death as "a staggering loss to all of us, a loss that leaves us bewildered and filled with a lot sorrow".

Clarke also spoke of Captain Barkey's friendship with Irie Jam Radio, and said that the late entertainer had on several occasions performed at the Station's reggae flagship concert Irie Jamboree, and other events sponsored by the station.

An emotional New York-based DJ, Lloyd D Stiff recalled speaking to Captain Barkey hours before he was killed. New York reggae acts Chopper Ranks, Jah Jah Yute and singer Leighton Miller all offered musical tributes.
