Outraged artistes release track condemning rape

The increase in the number of rape cases the public is being made aware of across the island has sparked outrage among Jamaicans and the musicians are not excluded.

 

Veteran producer Donovan Germain has teamed up with a host of artistes to release a song condemning the act titled Stand Against Rape.

According to Germain, the idea for the song came to him after seeing the increase in rape cases being reported by the newspapers.

"Every day you get up you see rape incidents in the newspaper. I think the industry needs to take a position," he said.

The rhythm used in the song is a sample of Buju Banton's 1994 hit Till I'm Laid To Rest. The track features Marcia Griffiths, Queen Ifrika, Tessanne Chin, D-Major, Shuga, Ikaya among others.
D-Major told The Sunday Gleaner it was important for entertainers to take a stand against rape.
"Mi come up wid a 'nine night' melody and I lay down the chorus which turned out to be the chorus of the song," he said.

Tessanne Chin said as Jamaicans we must say "enough is enough".

"It is very necessary for all females and for all Jamaicans to stand up against these atrocities that are happening in our country," she said.

Though the song has been getting some airplay since its release two weeks ago, Germain thinks there should be a greater level of commitment from the disc jocks.

Sensitise people

 

"Getting airplay should be a total commitment from the disc jocks because this is a national problem. They need to keep playing the song to sensitise people about what is taking place," Germain went on to say.

"My position is that so many things that are happening are not being addressed by persons in the industry. We need to give people hope and inspire them. The success of the industry was based on us addressing the issues and letting people know there is hope," Germain told The Sunday Gleaner.
