Tosh celebrations for mid October

REGGAE great Peter Tosh's life and legacy will be recognised in a series of events from October 15-19.

On October 15, National Heroes Day, Tosh will be conferred with the Order of Merit, Jamaica's third highest civic honour, during the annual national honours and awards ceremony.

October 19 is the birthday of the fiery singer/songwriter who was murdered in September, 1987 at his St Andrew home.

The Peter Tosh Estate is coordinating the events, which start following the national honours and awards ceremony, with a private reception hosted by the Estate and Pulse Investments' Kingsley Cooper.

Three days later, there will be a concert at Cooper's Pulse Centre in New Kingston.

According to Cooper, Pulse had a strong relationship with Tosh.

"Peter's last concert performance before his untimely death was at Pulse's Superjam. Pulse has long held the rights to the video of that concert, some of which will be shown during the period of the celebrations," Cooper said.

Among the artistes confirmed for the show are Ky-Mani Marley, Marcia Griffiths, Junior Reid, and The Mighty Diamonds.

The University of the West Indies will also stage a symposium on Tosh's music on October 19.
