Black Queen's 'black and proud' doing well

Ocho Rios-based artiste Black Queen has found success with her emotionally charged song called 'Black and Proud' which celebrates the beauty of her black skin and criticises skin-bleaching in Jamaica. The public has responded favourably and the shows are rolling in.

"I am getting a number of offers for shows all across the globe, I have a show in New York on November 24, and I have a show in Port Maria in St Mary in December as well, so things are picking up. A lot of people and promoters are linking me about Black and Proud," Black Queen said in a release.

The song hit No.9 on the HYPE TV Top 20 charts this week, and is No.2 on Suzie Q's Video Alley show on TVJ.

The single has become an insider sensation in dancehall circles because of its strong lyrical content, catchy delivery and its pro-black sentiments in a nation grappling with its identity, and has endeared Black Queen's single to local disc jockeys and black power activists.

"I just want to big up the disc jockeys who are showing support, Elise, Big A, everybody from HITZ, and ZIP, much love," the deejay, who is signed to Secrets Records, said.

She returned to Jamaica after a six-week tour where she did gigs along the east coast and midwest regions of the United States. Since her return to Jamaica, she appeared on TVJ's Intense and performed live on HYPE TV's popular Up and Live show.

She has a new love song, Love Yu From Long Time, on a reggae one-drop rhythm, and a racy dancehall track called Good Like Gold, featuring Mega Banton.

"You have to be able to do different songs for different segments of the marketplace, the love song is geared towards older folks, while the dancehall track is for the hardcore fans," she said.

She is looking forward to performing at this year's Sting 2012 and GT Xtravaganza year-end concerts in December.

Black Queen first made a name for herself with her R&B-flavoured Roll With Me, which did exceptionally well on the CVM Hitlist countdown, peaking at No.3 on the chart. But afterwards, she scored a major hit with You Say, that peaked at No.1 on the FIWI Choice top 10 charts. The song also gained a lot of support from the radio disc jockeys who loved the saucy, juicy track, and the public loved the racy, visually excellent video that accompanied it.
