It seems the best two contestants were saved for last on Sunday's airing of Digicel Stars that was held at the Courtleigh Auditorium, New Kingston. After the performances from six other contestants in the competition, John-Ross Austin took the stage and belted out notes with his strong voice. Singing You Are God Alone, he made people rise to their feet to applaud him.
The usually critical Conroy Wilson from the pop team said, "He delivered, very good voice, and he was on key." The other judges, including his mentor, Carlene Davis, thought he made a good choice with the song and sang it well.
He was followed by Sherona Jonas from the pop team, who did a rendition of Michael Jackson's Hold Me. She sang passionately and earned a standing ovation for her efforts.
D-Major, who no longer has anyone on the R&B/soul team after his Golda Watson was eliminated on Saturday, said Sherona is one of the stronger vocalists in the competition. Fellow judges Carlene Davis and Koffy were also pleased with the performance.Pop contestant
But Wilson, who seems to be expecting a clean sweep from the pop team, said, "Sherona, 1-2-3. To God be the glory."Earlier in the night, pop contestant Fallon Phillips was the first to take the stage. Although she had minor glitches, she seemed to impress the judges.
Jamaican Sound's DSL sang a medley with Romain Virgo's Taking You Home and Christopher Martin's Cheaters' Prayer. His mentor Koffy was impressed with his performance, while the other judges thought he did well.
Davis was pleased with the ministering from Richie Bless. However, Wilson said the other two gospel contestants are stronger than he is.
With a different image, Ashley Donaldson sang Nobody Perfect. "Last week, you were going through some challenges, but this week, you redeemed yourself," said Davis.
Lawayne McLean found favour with the judges, but Davis seemed as if she was most impressed because the contestant had challenges earlier in the week that were not evident in the performance.
Trudy-Ann Harrison did a bit of dancing during her short stint on stage as she sang a couple reggae classics. Although she was confident and has good stage presence, she did not seem to completely wow the audience.
The show closed with a guest appearance from Demarco, who sang Love My Life.
