Soothing sounds from Richie Spice

HE may not have packed the punch of previous acts at the venue, but Richie Spice gave a workmanlike performance Tuesday in the latest live gig at Usain Bolt's Tracks and Records club.

Although an enthusiastic crowd which included Shaggy and cricketer Chris Gayle warmed to most of the roots singer's 90-minute set, his lack of interaction caused him at times to lose momentum.
Spice's strongest moments came when he belted out hits like Earth a Run Red, Righteous Youths, World is a Cycle, Ghetto Girl and Brown Skin which all got the singalong treatment.

Backed by a four-piece band and a harmony trio, Spice also did several songs in acoustic form including Youths So Cold, My Heart and Grooving Girl. The latter segued into a well-received rendition of Carl Dawkins' Satisfaction.

Ticks after midnight, Spice returned for a two-song encore comprising the ganja anthem The Plane Land and Legal.

The show, which was initially scheduled for October 23, was postponed due to Hurricane Sandy. It was used to launch Spice's Soothing Sounds: Acoustic album which was released last week.
